ic training helped to break down the barriers between these soldiers that had come from all over the country, they created a "special sense of kinship." Though they became more united, the U.S. army was segregated at the start of the war. African Americans and white Americans were seperacted into different military units, along with this, they had different mess halls, latrines, barracks and rec centers. The white Officers were always in charge of the African American units. It was a hard time for the African Americans, for the world's greatest democracy fought the world's greatest racist with a segregated Army. African Americans were degraded in every way possible by not only the Army, but also by society. Military leaders wanted to keep them out of combat and assigned them to construction and supply units. Although some African Americans did not want to support the war anymore, many minority groups kept fighting and performing with courage, they were a great contribution to the war.
